Laboratory Technician

Laboratory Technician (Clinical, Research or R&D) is responsible for performing moderate and high complexity testing with strict adherence to regulatory requirements.  All of the duties and responsibilities will be performed according to laboratory guidelines and procedures.  The Laboratory Technician reports to Lead Laboratory Technician (Department Lead) and/or Laboratory Manager.

Essential Functions

  1. Performs analyses to produce reliable and precise data using automated, semi-automated and manual techniques.
  2. Responsible for the performance, quality assessment and reporting of assigned analytical test procedures.
  3. Calibrates, maintains and operates instruments in assigned area. (e.g. GC, LC-MS, analytical balance, autoanalyzer, centrifuge, speed vac, etc)
  4. Performs scheduled preventive maintenance and corrective action as necessary on assigned laboratory instrumentation.
  5. Prepares calibrators and performs assay calibrations according to established protocols.
  6. Prepares quality control material and performs quality control assessments according to protocols.
  7. Prepares reagents according to laboratory procedures and protocols.
  8. Interprets, accepts, and releases patient test results following established protocols.
  9. Performs or assists with troubleshooting and process improvements.
  10. Maintains sufficient levels of reagent and consumable supplies in assigned area.
  11. Complies with safety policies and procedures in the work area and uses applicable protective equipment at all times to prevent exposure to potentially infectious blood and body fluids.
  12. Maintains a clean and safe working environment.
  13. Ability to work and meet deadlines in a fast paced, changing environment.
  14. Completes all work during shift without sacrificing quality of care.
  15. Actively contributes to the team effort by volunteering to assist co-workers.
  16. Provides training to other laboratory personnel as needed.
  17. Communicates with coworkers, vendors and clients with tact and sensitivity.
  18. Maintains confidentiality of laboratory information.
  19. Writes legibly and with complete and accurate documentation.
  20. Writes and/or reviews laboratory documents such as procedures and departmental forms.
  21. Works on special projects as needed.

Work Environment/Physical Requirements

  1. Operational flexibility is required to meet sudden and unpredictable needs.
  2. Work under pressure and within time standards.
  3. Requires periodic standing, stretching, stooping and bending. Lift, pull, push and move objects of up to 25 pounds.
  4. Required to wear protective clothing such as lab coats, gloves, face shields, etc. when there is exposure to blood and blood products and/or where work location requires.

Education & Experience Requirements

  1. Minimum education includes a Bachelor’s degree in one of the following: a physical science (chemistry, biology, microbiology), clinical laboratory science, or medical technology.
  2. Also desired is one year of laboratory training and experience in clinical laboratory testing.
  3. Possess an in-depth knowledge of complex laboratory techniques, laboratory safety and quality assurance that will support ongoing and future projects.
  4. Ability to communicate well through written and verbal means is required.
  5. Proficient with statistical and computer productivity software (i.e. Word, Excel, etc.) required.
