While extensive human studies are lacking and the understanding of underlying mechanisms is still unfolding, multiple studies have shown that the omega-3s EPA and DHA reduce cellular injury and adverse outcomes associated with concussion. Ensuring that omega-3 levels are adequate could play a significant role in protecting the brain and improving functional outcomes in those who are susceptible to repeated head injury in sports like football, soccer and hockey.
